Ten Years of Commitment to Youth Programs at the Central and Regional Library of Berlin
December 15, 2006.The Youth Library at the America Memorial Library branch celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2006. The Youth Library is a meeting point for young people of diverse social and cultural backgrounds, providing many opportunities to read, play, learn and grow. In honor of the library’s anniversary, Natalie Koenig, wife of Deputy Chief of Mission John Koenig, presented the library with books selected from First Lady Laura Bush’s recommended list of youth titles. Mrs. Koenig and youth librarian Karen Groening also read from selected titles in English and German for a class from the Galileo School in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Earlier in December, the Embassy co-sponsored a school reading at the library by Holly-Jane Rahlens, an American author who lives in Berlin and recently won a German Youth Book prize. Embassy Information Resource Center staff and librarians at partner “America @ your library®” institutions work closely with schools to design reading promotion activities to complement English teaching and social studies curriculum needs.
