October 27–30, 2006.

76 teachers of English, History and Social Science, among them several schoolbook writers and curriculum planners, met in Wittenberg to discuss historical, political, cultural and economic developments of the southern states. Keynote speaker John Boles of Rice University spread the wealth of lifelong research and provided the participants with a firm knowledge base serving as touchstone for all further contributions. Eva Boesenberg, Humboldt University, drew a line from post Civil War literary contributions to contemporary writing by discussing the achievements of leading southern voices such as Ernest Gaines, Alice Walker and Edward Ball. Political Scientist David Lublin, American University, presented research on the changing political landscape in the South. Workshops discussed classroom models on African-American representation and the Voting Rights Act, diversity and the notion of the “Good Society,” religion and New Orleans as a starting point for cross-curricular student projects.
