Sue Timken
Sue Timken was born in Canton, Ohio and grew up in Cincinnati, where she also attended university. She has a background in retailing and marketing; and owned and ran a fashion boutique in Washington, DC.
Sue Timken has lived in many other different cities and regions of the United States, including Denver and Vail in Colorado, Durham, North Carolina and San Francisco, California.
Since her marriage to William R. Timken, Jr. in 1997, she has accompanied her husband on his business travels around the world; often staying longer periods in various cities where the Timken Company has affiliates. On their travels, Mrs. Timken was most interested in discovering what was unique about different places and cultures, enjoying visits to local museums and galleries and learning about local design and fashion trends. When home in Canton, the Timkens lead a more casual lifestyle. They both enjoy sports and are both football and baseball fans.
Mrs. Timken is a strong supporter of charity, fund-raising and volunteerism. On November 21, 2008 received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bundesverdienstkreuz, in appreciation of her social and philanthropic work within Germany. Mrs. Timken is being recognized for her efforts at reaching out to Germany’s immigrant youth and Muslim community.
Together, the Timkens have six children and seven grandchildren. After more than three years in Germany, Ambassador Timken and his wife returned to the U.S. in December 2008.
