Legion of Merit Award

May 17, 2006.

Ambassador Timken presented the Legion of Merit Award to Colonel Franz-Josef Nolte on May 17, 2006. Colonel Nolte, the German Air Attaché to the United States from September 2001 to May 2004, was awarded the Legion of Merit for outstanding professionalism displayed during this period of assignment in Washington, D.C. He was instrumental in strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the United States and German Air Forces. Colonel Nolte is now assigned as the Branch Chief for Air Force Training in Bonn, Germany.

The Legion of Merit is awarded for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. An Act of Congress on 20 July 1942 established the Legion of Merit. This award is the first United States military decoration authorized to be presented to citizens of other nations.
