During his visit to Berlin, Attorney General Gonzales met with German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries. Later he delivered remarks to the German Marshall Fund.
The U.S. Attorney General also met with senior German foreign editors to discuss U.S. detainee policies and spoke at the German Marshall Fund of the United States on the "Rule of Law in the War on Terror". He dealt with questions relating to the U.S. definition of torture, U.S.-German cooperation in the war on terror, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their impact on American counterterrorism efforts; the Murat Kurnaz case; new U.S. legislation concerning military tribunals, and the German public's perceptions of the US war against terror.
The Attorney General made the point that there were a lot of misperceptions around the world about how the U.S. was conducting the war against terrorism, particularly concerning the new tribunal legislation, and that his trip to Europe was in large part an attempt to clear up these misperceptions.
He consistently made the point that President Bush and his team are working hard daily to try to make America and allied countries safer places to live, and that the war on terror sometimes required changing tactics in order to stay one step ahead of the enemy.
