John Koenig became Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Germany on December 5, 2008, when Ambassador William R. Timken, Jr. completed his service as United States Ambassador to Germany.
Mr. Koenig assumed duties as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission in Germany on 14 August 2006. Since joining the Foreign Service in 1984, he has held a number of senior positions in U.S. diplomatic missions in Europe, most recently as Deputy Permanent Representative and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission to NATO in Brussels from 2003 to 2006. In Brussels, John Koenig guided efforts to expand NATO’s Afghanistan operation from Kabul to the north, west, and south of the country, and spearheaded outreach to new partners in the Middle East and the western Pacific. As Acting Permanent Representative for five months in 2005, he was instrumental in launching NATO’s support for the African Union Mission in Sudan.
John Koenig served from 2000-2003 as Principal Officer at the American Consulate General Thessaloniki, where he organized the largest U.S. public affairs event ever held in Greece to that time, “Honored Nation – USA” at the Thessaloniki International Fair. Previous assignments abroad include Political-Military Officer/Deputy Political Counselor, American Embassy Athens, 1997-2000; Political Counselor, American Embassy Nicosia, 1994-1997; Political Officer, American Embassy Jakarta, 1990-1993; Political Officer, American Embassy (East) Berlin, 1985-1987; and Vice Consul, American Embassy Manila, 1984-85. He has also served at the State Department in Washington, as Staff Assistant in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and as Watch Officer in the Operations Center.
John Koenig holds a Masters of Arts, Foreign Relations, from Johns Hopkins University, School of Advanced International Studies, Washington, DC, and a Bachelor of Arts, Anthropology, from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington. He speaks German, Greek, and Indonesian.
Mr. Koenig has received a number of professional awards, including three Superior Honor Awards, three Meritorious Honor Awards, and the Sinclaire Language Award from the Department of State.
Born in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington, John Koenig grew up in the Puget Sound area. His wife, Natalie, is from Bellingham, Washington. They have two sons, Ted (born 1990) and Alex (born 1992).
