50 Years of the Childrens Library at the Amerika Gedenk Bibliothek
November 16, 2007. There are many significant connections between Berliners and Americans, but the Embassy’s relationship with the America Memorial Library – a gift from the American people following the 1948-49 Berlin Blockade – is particularly special. Given the chance to build a "cultural center," Berliners opted for an open stack, American-style public library, which represented – in the words of Secretary of State Dean Acheson, who attended the foundation stone laying ceremony of the library – the “freedom to learn, to study, and to search for the truth.” A children’s library, which was added in 1957, celebrated its 50th birthday on November 16. Natalie Koenig, wife of DCM John Koenig, and Cultural Affairs Officer Peter Claussen represented the Embassy at the ceremony. The library is one of Mission Germany’s strongest partners in its America@yourlibrary initiative and works with IRC staff on chat reference services, cultural programs, educational advising seminars, and projects highlighting the history of German-American relations.
