Remarks by Ambassador Coats at the Opening of the Albam Jewish Education and Family Center of the Chabad Lubawitsch

04/27/2004

Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal,

Mayor Koch,

Thank you for inviting me to take part in the opening of the Albam Jewish Education and Family Center. This is a significant event in the life of the Jewish Community in Berlin. I also think it is appropriate that you have chosen to open this center on the eve of an historic and timely OSCE conference on anti-Semitism.

On behalf of the US Embassy, let me express my appreciation to you, Rabbi Teichtel, and to the Jewish Community for your ongoing commitment to the strengthening of ties across ethnic, racial, and religious lines among people of good will. Unfortunately we live in a world where many still see differences of color, culture and creed as threats rather than as assets. One of the most important things we can do to defeat anti-Semitism is to educate the younger generation about the importance of religious tolerance and respect. In this regard, the Albam Jewish Education and Family Center will play a most important and needed role.

Thank you.
