American Studies 2009

"Urban Cultures, Urban Landscapes: Growing Up in the American City"

U.S. Embassy Fachleiter Conference 2009/American Studies Seminar
Bonn, May 21-24, 2009
In cooperation with the Amerikazentrum Hamburg and the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut e.V. Bonn

The regular American Studies Seminar provides up-to-date information on American society and values to secondary school teachers from all German states, in particular multipliers in the field of English and the Social Sciences, 'Fachberater' and 'Fachleiter', secondary school curriculum planners, representatives of ministries of education, textbook writers, and educators. The conference atmosphere is one of intense exchange with American specialists in interdisciplinary aspects of politics, economics, and American studies. Lectures and discussions will be in English.

This year's seminar will explore what growing up in urban landcapes in the United States is like. The conference will allow a look back at New York City in the mid 20th century through personal memoir, but will mainly concentrate on the contemporary city as well as discuss how popular culture, education, and urban planning contribute to a vibrant and community oriented youth culture.
