German Public Schools
All children residing in Germany, regardless of nationality, are required by law to attend school between the ages of 6 and 15 years. The general school program consists of four years of Grundschule and five years of Hauptschule. There is no tuition, not even for foreigners. Classes are taught in the German language. A child’s adjustment to this system would largely depend on his ability to learn the German language and come to terms with an environment where there might be no other English-speaking children. After four years of Grundschule or possibly four years of Grundschule and one year of Hauptschule, students may be eligible to enter Gymnasium, which is somewhat similar to the American junior and senior high schools, but entrance is normally limited to students who show great scholastic achievement, and, in the case of foreigners, are fluent in the German language. Further information about German public schools in Bavaria and secondary education programs can be obtained by writing to the addresses below. (Enrollment information regarding German public Kindergarten is also available from the same addresses).
